About HSWET

The Hopkins Student Wind Energy Team (HSWET) is a group of students at the Johns Hopkins University who are (maybe a little too) obsessed with wind energy. Founded in 2020 to compete in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Collegiate Wind Competition, HSWET has grown into a multidisciplinary team that combines expertise in engineering, business, policy, research, and communications to design innovative solutions for the sustainable future.

We work on:

  • Technical innovation, from turbine design concepts to data-driven solutions for load control and optimization.
  • Offshore and onshore wind project development, including siting, permitting, cost modeling, and power offtake strategies.
  • Professional and educational outreach, through workshops, panels, and partnerships with industry leaders to inspire and engage students in clean energy.

HSWET has earned recognition at recent Collegiate Wind Competitions:

  • 2022: 2nd place overall, 1st in Project Development
  • 2023: 2nd in Project Development, 1st in Turbine Design
  • 2024: 2nd in Connection Creation
  • 2025: 5th place overall, 4th in Turbine Design, 1st in Project Development

Our team has grown from the initial 22 members during the pandemic to 63 active members for the 2025 competition cycle — and we’re always excited to welcome more. If you’re passionate about sustainability, curious about energy, or just want to join a team that works hard and laughs harder, come say hi.

We’d love to have you.
